Synchronous e-debating across borders

In the language classroom, debating gives students an opportunity to expand their critical thinking skills by investigating and exploring controversial issues from the perspective of various stakeholders. In addition to critical thinking skills, debating across borders can contribute to developing students’ linguistic and intercultural competence within a global community of English speakers. The aim of this presentation is to share how a MEXT-sponsored project in which Japanese university students participated in synchronous e-debates with university students in Poland, Taiwan, and Vietnam was implemented and modified. The e-debating project highlighted the importance of project managers to scaffold the debates so that students were equipped with clear stakeholder positions and clash and rebuttal strategies. The project also revealed how students, by participating in an online learning community before, during, and after the e-debate sessions through SNS, were able to enlarge their global communication network. In the end, this project made students realize that they needed to learn how to support opinions with concrete evidence based on well-chosen stakeholders in order to assist in their understanding of global issues from multiple viewpoints.
語学の授業では、ディベートはさまざまなステークホルダーの立場から論争の的となる問題について調査し探求することで学生の批判的思考力を高める好機となる。批判的思考力に加えて、国境を越えて議論をすることで、英語話者の国際的なコミュニティの中で学生の言語的・文化的理解能力の発展にも寄与しうる。本発表の目的は、文科省後援による、日本の大学生がポーランド、台湾、ベトナムの大学生とのe-ディベートに参加するプロジェクトが、どのようの実行され修正されたかを共有することである。e-ディベートプロジェクトを実施した結果、学生が明確なステークホルダーの立ち位置を把握し、意見の折衝・論駁の方策を身につけさせるためにも、プロジェクトの運営者がディベートの土台を築くことの重要性が浮き彫りになった。本プロジェクトはまた、学生がSNSを通じてe-ディベートの期間中、およびその前後にオンライン上のラーニング・コミュニティに参加するすることで、彼らの国際的コミュニケーションのネットワークをどのようにして広げていくことができたかという点も明らかにした。最後に、本プロジェクトは学生に、多様な観点から地球規模の問題を理解するためにも、適切なステークホルダーに基づいた具体的な根拠で意見を補強する方法を学ぶ必要性を認識させた。 -

The aim of this presentation is to share how a project in which Japanese university students participated in synchronous e-debates with Vietnamese students was implemented and modified. Students, who represented key stakeholders, learned how to support their opinions with concrete evidence in order to understand global issues from multiple viewpoints.

The presenter discusses some of the successes and challenges of developing study abroad courses to build students’ critical thinking skills and briefly share findings from a self-study action research project about in-class collaborative learning activities that fostered critical thinking in study abroad courses. The purpose of this presentation is for coordinators of study abroad programs to gain insight into integrating critical thinking skills into study abroad courses designed to raise critical global thinkers.
