Photoneutron cross sections for three Pb isotopes (Pb-206, Pb-207, Pb-208) near neutron threshold were measured with the laser inverse-Compton scattering gamma rays at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The cross section data are presented.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Sn-117 and Sn-116 near the neutron thresholds at 6.94 and 9.56 MeV, respectively, with quasi-monochromatic laser-Compton scattering gamma rays. The Sn-117 cross section, which is strongly enhanced near the low threshold, provides evidence for the presence of extra gamma strength in the low-energy tail of the giant dipole resonance. A coherent analysis of the photoneutron data for Sn-117 together with the neutron capture on Sn-116 shows that the gamma-ray strength function is balanced in the photoneutron and neutron capture channels in terms of the microscopic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus quasiparticle random-phase approximation model of E1 strength combined with a pygmy E1 resonance at 8.5 MeV. The high-energy part of the pygmy resonance is also suggested in the photoneutron cross section for Sn-116.

Proton decay from the 3 (h) over bar omega isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in Ni-58 has been measured using the (alpha, alpha' p) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered alpha particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of Co-57 have been determined, and the results compared with predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in Co-57 were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.

The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in 208Pb have been investigated via the 208Pb (α, α′ p) 207Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles 208Pb (α, α′) spectra is not present in the excitation energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The partial branching ratios for direct proton decay of ISGDR to low-lying states of 207Tl have been determined and the results are compared with predictions of continuum random-phase-approximation (CRPA) calculations. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The gamma d -> K(+)K(-)pn reaction has been studied to search for the evidence of the Theta(+) by detecting K+K- pairs at forward angles. The Fermi-motion-corrected nK(+) invariant mass distribution shows a narrow peak at 1.524 +/- 0.002+0.003 GeV/c(2). The statistical significance of the peak calculated from a shape analysis is 5.1 sigma, and the differential cross section for the gamma n -> K-Theta(+) reaction is estimated to be 12 +/- 2 nb/sr in the photon energy range from 2.0 to 2.4 GeV in the LEPS angular range by assuming the isotropic production of the Theta(+) in the gamma n center-of-mass system. The obtained results support the existence of the Theta(+).
