We studied analogs of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) and spin-dipole resonance (SDR) in He4 and in the α clusters of Li6,7 via the (Li7,Be7γ) reactions on He4, Li6, and Li7 at an incident energy of 455 MeV and at a scattering angle of 0°by measuring spin-nonflip and spin-flip spectra. The reaction Q-values for the analogs of the GDR and SDR in the α clusters of Li6,7 were found to be more negative than those in He4 by 2.0±0.5 MeV. The ratios of the cross section for the analog of the GDR to that for the analog of the SDR in He4 and in the α clusters of Li6 and Li7 were found to be the same within errors, 0.5±0.1. The cross sections for the analogs of the GDR as well as those for the analogs of the SDR in the α clusters of Li6,7 were 0.6∼0.8 times smaller than those in He4. These results suggest that excitations of α clusters embedded in nuclei are suppressed as compared with excitations of free α particles. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Zr-91, Zr-92, and Zr-94 near the neutron separation energy with quasimonochromatic gamma rays. The data exhibit some extra components around the neutron threshold. A coherent analysis of the photoneutron data for Zr-92 together with the neutron capture on Zr-91 based on the microscopic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus quasiparticle random-phase approximation model for the E1 strength has revealed the presence of an M1 resonance at 9 MeV. The microscopic approach systematically shows the same M1 strength in the photoneutron cross section for Zr-91 and Zr-94. The total M1 strength is about 75% larger than the strength predicted by the systematics, being qualitatively consistent with the giant M1 resonance observed in the inelastic proton scattering.

A complete set of Wolfenstein parameters (D-i(') j), induced polarizations (P), and analyzing powers (A(y)) have been measured for (p,2p) reactions on Li-6, C-12, and Ca-40 targets in order to investigate possible nuclear medium effects on the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. Most of these observables show significant reductions from the values for proton-proton scattering as monotonic functions of the nuclear density relevant to these reactions. The reductions of these D(i)(')j are reasonably reproduced by nonrelativistic plane-wave and distorted-wave calculations based on the impulse approximation, demonstrating that these suppressions are attributed to changes of the two body kinematics due to the finite separation energies of these reactions, while the reductions of A(y) and P are much more prominent than the calculations. The relativistic calculations, which partly explain the A(y) and P reductions, cannot reproduce the D(i)(')j data, but all the data are consistently reproduced when the parameters of the NN interaction in a meson exchange model are renormalized, suggesting possible modifications of the NN interaction by the surrounding nuclear medium.
