The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in Pb-208 has been investigated using inelastic scattering of 200 MeV alpha particles at and near 0 degrees where the angular distribution of the ISGDR can be clearly differentiated from other modes. The ''difference of spectra'' technique was employed to separate the contribution from the high-energy octupole resonance (HEOR). Preliminary angular distribution data provide clear evidence for the ISGDR adjacent to the HEOR.

Low-lying states in 56Fe, up to an excitation energy of about 4 MeV, have been investigated by means of inelastic proton and deuteron scattering experiments at Ep=65 and 400 MeV and at Ed=56 MeV, respectively. Measured cross sections and analyzing powers have been compared with coupled-channels calculations using collective form factors
calculations in both the Schrödinger and Dirac formalisms have been carried out for the proton data. For each probe, the matrix elements have been deduced for transitions from the ground state and from the 2+1 state to six quadrupole (2+) states to one octupole (3-1) and two hexadecapole (4+1 and 4+2) states. The obtained matrix elements and the previous values from y decay or electron inelastic scattering have been used to evaluate the isospin character of the transitions. To discuss the quadrupole mixed-symmetry states in 56Fe, the deduced neutron (Mn) and proton (Mp) components of the matrix elements, or equivalently the isoscalar (Ms) and isovector (Mv) parts, have been compared with theoretical calculations based on the neutron-proton interacting boson model and on the shell model evaluated in a full f-p configuration space. -

We have measured the zero-degree cross sections for proton inelastic scattering to the 1+, T=0 (12.7 MeV) and 1+, T=1 (15.1 MeV) states in C12 at 65, 100, 200, 300, and 400 MeV. The ratios of cross sections [dσ/dΩ(1+, T=0)]/[dσ/dΩ(1+,T=1)] at 0°are compared with the calculations in the distorted wave approximation using various effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. The experimental ratios are found to be smaller than the theoretical predictions. It was found that the experimental results were better described by modifying the isovector tensor terms of the effective interactions. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

The 208Pb(3He,t)208Bi reaction has been studied with the RCNP ring cyclotron at E(3He) = 450 MeV using the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden at θ = 0°. The Gamow-Teller resonance is strongly excited at this bombarding energy. Its microscopic structure has been investigated by measuring the direct proton decay to the neutron-hole states in 207Pb. The branching ratio for proton emission of a few % is much smaller than that for the decay of the isobaric analog state. The total width of the Gamow-Teller resonance as well as its total and partial escape widths have been determined. Several recent theoretical estimates for the escape width differ from the measured values by factors of ~ 2.5. © 1994.

Spin-isospin excitations in nuclei have been studied by means of the (He-3,t) reactions at 450 MeV on the targets Be-9, (nat)C, Si-28, Ni-58, Ni-62, Zr-90, Sn-118, Sn-120, 124Sn, and Sm-154. The new spectrometer ''Grand Raiden'' was employed for the (He-3,t) study for the first time. Observed (He-3,t) spectra at 0-degrees show remarkable similarity with those from the (p,n) results at intermediate energies, suggesting a simple direct reaction mechanism for the (He-3,t) reaction at 450 MeV. The Gamow-Teller (GT) resonances and the spin-flip DELTAL = 1 resonances are excited very strongly. A fine structure of the GT resonances in medium-heavy nuclei is observed with an energy resolution of 210 keV. It is demonstrated that the (He-3,t) reaction at 450 MeV is a powerful tool to study the spin-isospin excitations in nuclei.
