A high-resolution magnetic spectrometer called "Grand Raiden" is operated at the RCNP ring cyclotron facility in Osaka for nuclear physics studies at intermediate energies. This magnetic spectrometer has excellent ion-optical properties. In the design of the spectrometer, the second-order dispersion matching condition has been taken into account, and almost all the aberration terms such as (x\theta(3)), (x\theta phi(2)), (x\theta(2)delta) and (x\theta delta(2)) in a third-order matrix calculation are optimized. A large magnetic rigidity of the spectrometer (K = 1400 MeV) gives a great advantage to measure the charge-exchange (He-3, t) reactions at 450 MeV. The ability of the high-resolution measurement has been demonstrated. Various coincidence measurements are performed to study the nuclear structures of highly excited states through decay properties of nuclear levels following nuclear reactions at intermediate energies. The isovector electric monopole resonance (IVMR) was studied by the 60Ni(7Li, 7 Be)60Co reaction at 65A MeV and at forward scattering angles including zero degrees. We confirmed the existence of the IVMR at an excitation energy of 20 ± 2 MeV with a width of 10 ± 2 MeV in 60Co, which is an analog of the T0+1 isospin component of the IVMR estimated at Ex ≈ 31 MeV in 60Ni. The result presently obtained is consistent with previous results using the pion charge-exchange reaction. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

The cross sections of the isovector spin-dipole resonances (SDR) in the Sb isotopes excited by the (3He, t) charge-exchange reaction at 450 MeV for 0° ≤ θt ≤ 1.15° have been measured. The results are compared with the predicted sum-rule strengths related to the difference of neutron and proton root-mean-square radii. Within the model used, the radii differences (neutron-skin thicknesses) deduced for 114Sn, 116Sn, 118Sn, 122Sn, and 124Sn are ≤0.09, 0.12 ± 0.06, 0.13 ± 0.06, 0.22 ± 0.07, and 0.19 ± 0.07fm, respectively. This result suggests a new method for the measurement of the neutron-skin thicknesses of unstable nuclei. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

Polarization transfer (PT) observables in the 12C(p,p′) reaction at 0° for 392 MeV protons have been measured. The excitation strengths are decomposed into the spin-flip part and the non-spin-flip part by using the obtained PT observables. The PT observables for excitation of the 1+, T = 0 and 1+, T = 1 states are compared with distorted wave impulse approximation calculations. The strength ratios of the isoscalar spin-dependent term to the isovector tensor term and the isovector tensor term to the isovector spin-dependent term are reasonably consistent with the Franey and Love interaction. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions and [Formula Presented] transitions from or to the ground states are analogous in the pair of [Formula Presented] mirror nuclei, if the excited states hold the mirror-symmetry properties. In order to study the mirror-symmetry structure of the [Formula Presented] mirror nuclei [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] experimental data on GT transition strengths obtained from [Formula Presented] decay and from a good-resolution [Formula Presented] reaction at 150 MeV/nucleon and 0° have been compared with [Formula Presented] transition strengths obtained from [Formula Presented] decay in [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] reaction. Good overall correspondence of transitions is observed for states up to nearly 9 MeV in excitation energy, where the particle-decay channel becomes important. The difference of excitation energies of analog states in the mirror nuclei are about 250 keV at this excitation energy. From a comparison of [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] strengths of the analogous transitions, the contribution of the isoscalar and the orbital terms in the [Formula Presented] operator is found to become prominent in weak [Formula Presented] transitions. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

We investigated the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the [Formula Presented] reaction at [Formula Presented] on light nuclei of [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] A one-step reaction process with a main contribution from the central force is dominant in the [Formula Presented] reaction at forward angles. The cross sections observed at [Formula Presented] for the GT transitions were found to be proportional to the GT strengths deduced from the β decay. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

The charge-exchange 71Ga(3He,tγ)71Ge reaction was used to study the spin-isospin (Gamow Teller: GT) excitations relevant to the axial-vector charged-weak response for solar neutrinos. High-lying GT states in 71Ge with excitation energies up to one MeV above the neutron threshold were found to have finite γ-decay branches to low-lying states. The GT strengths for relevant states and absorption rates of solar neutrinos through the 71Ga(e)71Ge and 71Ga(ν,eγ)71Ge reactions were derived. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
