Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Au in the entire energy range of the (gamma,n) channel based on a direct neutron-counting technique with quasimonochromatic gamma rays produced in inverse Compton-scattering of laser photons with relativistic electrons. We present results of the measurement in comparison with the past data.

The gamma-ray strength function method is devised to indirectly determine radiative neutron capture cross sections for radioactive nuclei. This method is applied here to the Pd-107 (T-1/2 = 6.5 x 10(6) yr) case. Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Pd-105,Pd-106,Pd-108 near neutron threshold with quasimonochromatic laser-Compton-scattering gamma-ray beams. These photoneutron cross sections as well as the reverse radiative neutron capture cross sections for Pd-104,Pd-105 are used to provide constraints on the Pd-107(n,gamma)Pd-108 cross section.

Differential cross sections for the 02+ state at Ex=7.654 MeV in C12 were measured with the (p,p′) reaction at an incident energy of Ep=300 MeV, and in an angular range from θLab=2.7° to 40°. The cross-section data were compared with the distorted-wave Born-approximation calculations employing three types of transition densities obtained in a macroscopic collective model, a microscopic α-cluster model, and a microscopic α-cluster condensation model. It is concluded that the measured angular distribution of the differential cross sections for the C12(p,p′) reaction at 300 MeV is consistently described with the assumption that the 02+ state at Ex=7.654 MeV is the dilute α-cluster condensed state. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

We have investigated the isoscalar giant resonances in the Sn isotopes using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV α particles at extremely forward angles, including 0°. We have obtained completely "background-free" inelastic-scattering spectra for the Sn isotopes over the angular range 0°-9° and up to an excitation energy of 31.5 MeV. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. We find that the centroid energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than the theoretical predictions. In addition, based on the ISGMR results, a value of Kτ=-550±100 MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility. Constraints on interactions employed in nuclear structure calculations are discussed on the basis of the experimentally obtained values for K and Kτ. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Zr-96 near neutron threshold with quasimonochromatic laser-Compton-scattering. gamma-ray beams. A systematic analysis of photoneutron and radiative neutron capture data for zirconium isotopes within the statistical model calculation leads to a unified picture of low-energy gamma-ray strengths for zirconium isotopes that is described by the HFB + QRPA model of E1 strength supplemented with an extra gamma strength attributed to a giant M1 resonance. Results of the systematic analysis including radiative neutron capture cross sections for radioactive Zr-95 and Zr-93 nuclei are presented.
