The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in Pb-208 has been investigated with inelastic a-scattering of 400 MeV at extremely forward angles, including 0degrees. Energy spectra, virtually free from instrumental background, have been obtained and the ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted using a multipole-decomposition analysis (MDA). A difference-of-spectra approach yields the same ISGDR centroid energy as with MDA. These results lead to a value for nuclear incompressibility that is consistent for both the isoscalar dipole and monopole modes. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

New measurements of the photoneutron reaction on Ta-181 have been conducted with the AIST-LCS (laser Compton scattering) beam in the 7.8less than or similar toE[MeV]less than or similar to12 energy range. The major advantage of the present gamma-ray experiment is its intense peaking in the energy window of astrophysical interest, i.e., close to the neutron threshold. Details on photon beams from the laser Compton scattering, neutron counting, and experimental determination of the Ta-181 photoneutron cross section are given. The present experimental data are in good agreement with the IAEA evaluation. Reaction rate calculations in the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model are performed and confronted with the experimental data. The data provide constraints on the low-energy tail of the dipole strength function. It is found that among the three different models for the E1-strength considered, only the microscopic quasiparticle random phase approximation model can reproduce the extra strength observed in the Ta-181(gamma,n)Ta-180 reaction at energies of about 8.5 MeV. Such an experiment helps to improve the determination of the corresponding stellar photodisintegration rate of Ta-181 which directly influences the p-process production of Ta-180.

A new baryon resonance with manifestly exotic strangeness quantum number S = +1 was first observed from the LEPS detector at the SPring-8 facility in Japan. The photoproduction reaction gamman --> K(-)Theta(+) was measured, where the neutron is bound in a C-12 nucleus and the Theta(+) is the new name of this resonance. The existence of the Theta(+) was inferred by observing a peak in the missing mass spectrum of the K-, with the requirement of a coincident K+ in the detector from the decay of the Theta(+). The mass of the resonance is 1.54 +/- 0.01 GeV and a width of < 25 MeV.
