A Ga-71(He-3,t)Ge-71 charge-exchange experiment was performed to extract with high precision the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strengths to the three lowest-lying states in Ge-71, i.e., the ground state (1/2(-)), the 175 keV (5/2(-)) and the 500 key (3/2(-)) excited states. These are the relevant states, which are populated via a charged-current reaction induced by neutrinos from reactor-produced Cr-51 and Ar-37 sources. A precise measurement of the GT transition strengths is an important input into the calibration of the SAGE and GALLEX solar neutrino detectors and addresses a long-standing discrepancy between the measured and evaluated capture rates from the Cr-51 and Ar-37 neutrino calibration sources, which has recently spawned new ideas about unconventional neutrino properties. Photoneutron cross sections were measured for Sn-118, Sn-119, Sn-120, Sn-122, and Sn-124 near neutron threshold with quasi-monochromatic laser-Compton scattering gamma rays. A systematic analysis of the present photoneutron data and existing neutron-capture data is made using the gamma-ray strength function on the basis of the HFB + QRPA model of E1 strength supplemented with a pygmy dipole resonance, which was deduced from a previous study on Sn-116 and Sn-117. Radiative neutron capture cross sections for two radioactive nuclei, Sn-121 and Sn-123, are deduced through the gamma-ray strength function method.

An indirect method of determining radiative neutron-capture cross sections for unstable nuclei which we refer to as the gamma-ray strength function (gamma SF) method is outlined and applied to Zr and Sn isotopes. Photoneutron cross sections for Zr-91,Zr-92,Zr-94,Zr-96 and Sn-117,Sn-116 near neutron threshold show the presence of extra gamma-ray strengths known as giant M1 and pygmy E1 resonances on top of the low-energy gamma SF of GDR. Based on the gamma SF method, we present (n,gamma) cross sections for two radioactive nuclei, a long-lived fission product, Zr-93 with T-1/2= 1.5 x 10(6) y and an s-process branching point nucleus, Zr-95 with T-1/2 = 64.0 d.

The (gamma, n) cross sections of Se isotopes (Se-76,Se-78) were measured to supply fundamental data for estimating the inverse reaction cross section, i.e., the Se-79(n, gamma)Se-80 cross section. The enriched samples and a reference Au-197 sample were irradiated with laser-Compton scattering (LCS) gamma-rays. The excitation function of each (gamma, n) cross section was determined for the energy range from each near neutron separation energy to the threshold energy of (gamma, 2n) reaction. The energy point corresponding to each cross section was deduced using the accurately determined energy distribution of LCS gamma-rays. Systematic (gamma, n) cross sections for Se isotopes including 80Se were compared with those calculated by using a statistical model calculation code TALYS.

Photoneutron cross section measurements were made for Au in the entire energy range of the (gamma,n) channel based on a direct neutron counting with quasi-monochromatic gamma-rays produced in inverse Compton scattering of laser photons with relativistic electrons. The data were analyzed by a least-squares method to deduce photoneutron cross sections. The analysis significantly reduced experimental uncertainties compared with those resulting from the photon difference method. The result is compared with the previous data by direct neutron counting with gamma-rays produced in positron annihilation in flight and by photoactivation with bremsstrahlung. The present data are in good agreement with the previous data near the neutron threshold, while there remain some discrepancies between the present and the previous data above 10 MeV.

The gamma-ray strength function (gamma SF) interconnects radiative neutron capture and photoneutron emission as a common ingredient in the statistical model. Outlined here is an indirect method of determining radiative neutron-capture cross sections for unstable nuclei based gamma-ray strength function. Application examples of the gamma SF method are demonstrated.

Photoneutron cross sections for Zr-90 near neutron threshold were examined with a photon difference technique using laser Compton scattering gamma-ray beams. The cross section decreasing in the vicinity of neutron threshold exhibited a steep rise within 150 keV above the threshold. We draw attention to a possible relation of this striking behavior to the 3P valence neutron resonance known in neutron capture in the mass region A approximate to 90.
