挿入句は、文の主要部と補部を分断することになるが、そうした分断が生じたとしても聞き手はその文の理解が可能である。文の理解に無理が生じないとすれば、主要部／挿入句／補部のそれぞれを意味の固まりとして聞き手は把握していることになる。本研究は、この意味の固まりが音響信号的にどう具現されるかを吟味した。英語母語話者の朗読文章をサンプルとし、調査対象は関係代名詞節や伝達節を含むことで分断が生じている文を取り上げた。特に節の境界部分の休止の有無、ピッチの下がり具合、声質の変化等を、音声分析ソフトを用い調査する方法を採用した。
