前近代のアラブ世界における知識の歴史において、口承伝達が大きな役割を果たしていたことは従来多くの研究で指摘されてきた。しかしハディース（預言者の伝承）や歴史的知識の伝達の仕方を詳しく見るならば、そこには「声の文化」よりも、「文字の文化」の特徴であるテクストの固定性や抽象的思考といった諸特徴が確認される。ここに、従来看過されてきたイスラーム的知の「書承性」について検討する意義が見いだせよう。
本研究ではイスラーム的知の書物による伝達に注目し、どのような書物が、どのような場所で、どのようにして用いられていたのかを考察する。中世後期において蔵書・研究機関の中心となったのは、ワクフ（寄進財産）制度によって運営されるモスクやマドラサ（学院）であるため、中世のワクフ文書群や、手稿本(写本)の奥付に記されたワクフ関連の書き込みを分析することで、当時の書物の具体的なあり方を解明する。 -

本研究は、「中世アラブの書物と文化」とのテーマのもと、従来一般に口承による知の伝達が重視されると考えられてきた中世アラブ世界において、書き言葉や書物による知の伝達がどのように発達し、一方の口承伝達とどのような関係を取り結んでいたのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。この目的のために、本研究ではアラビア語の写本・文書を一次史料として用い、文献学的手法に基づいてそれらを分析する。ここで言う「アラブ世界」とは、アラビア語を母語とする住民が社会の大半を占める地域、「中世」とはイスラームの成立以後、この地域のほぼ全域がオスマン帝国という広域国家によって統一されるまでという意味で用いるが、具体的にはバグダードを中心とするアッバース朝が衰退し、地域の政治・経済の中心がアレッポ、ダマスクス、カイロ等の都市に移行した、11世紀から15世紀にかけての東アラブ（マシュリク）地域、王朝名ではザンギー、アイユーブ、マムルーク朝における事象を扱う。
