This article aims to highlight certain intercultural differences among Japanese students within the context of communication exercises in a French as Foreign Language class and show how to develop creativity and autonomy in the students while avoiding reference to personal information about which the university code of conduct prohibits us from questioning our learners such as age, professions of their parents etc. Indeed, we encounter a number of problems coming from intercultural specificities with a « communicative approach ». A quarter of Japanese students hesitate to talk about their family in the class. They prefer remaining
anonymous. If the teacher forces them into talking about their personal information, a sort of mental block can arise on the part of some learners. These phenomena are a part of the Japanese culture and mentality. This tendency concerns the concept « high-context and
low-context cultures » that Edward T. Hall proposed. Belonging to a specific community is important in a high-context culture; however, the students in the same class do not constitute a stable community. We need certain ingenuities in order to reassure our leaners and motivate them in another way. We would like to describe some communication exercises, based on learners’ creativity and autonomy. -
