これまで対症療法として治療されてきた変形性膝関節症（膝OA） に対して、日本人特有の内反膝の成因を明らかにすることで、膝OA のリスクファクターとなる内反膝を成長期から見直し、長期的な視点から医療費削減へ向けた取り組みを行う.

膝伸展筋群は、加齢や疾患における身体活動量低下に関連するキーマッスルであり、多くのスポーツ活動で重要な役割を果たす筋である。しかし、共働筋の収縮動態については明らかではない部分が多く、特に深層の中間広筋は貢献度の高さが想定されているものの知見が少ない。本研究では、膝伸展筋群の収縮時の筋活動の変形動態を磁気共鳴映像法にて明らかにする手法の確立とその応用を目的とする。

変形性膝関節症の罹患者数は2530万人と推定され、そのリスクファクターの一つとして膝関節のマルアライメント（好ましくない骨・関節の配列）がある。しかし、膝マルアライメントの決定要因は未だ明らかになっておらず、リスクに対する予防策を講じることが困難な状況にある。本研究では、膝のアライメントが決定する成長期に焦点をあて、最大身長成長速度曲線のどの時期にマルアライメントが生じ、その要因が何であるかを明らかにすることを目的に実施する。また、幼少期より経時的に生じる膝マルアライメントと生活・運動習慣との関連を詳細に検討し、マルアライメント予防指針の構築を目指す。
