A quantitative analysis of the gender gap in ethical consumerism

The purpose of this paper is to examine how attitudes and experiences of ethical consumption reflect gender inequality in the private and public spheres. Micheletti (2003) proposes three models to explain gender differences in political consumption: the socialization model, the situational model, and the structural model. Based on these models, several hypotheses were formulated to explain individual differences in ethical consumption. According to the results of the analysis, the structural model was the most appropriate model to explain women's ethical consumption. Furthermore, it was found that not only the negative effects of political marginalization, as assumed in this model, but also the motivation to participate in politics can promote ethical consumption. The results of this study suggest that the difference in attitudes and experiences of ethical consumption between men and women is a gender gap based on the difference in political participation between men and women.

本研究の目的は、集合行為における「参加」と「動員」のプロセスを、社会ネットワーク研究の手法を応用して分析することである。社会運動研究において注目されてきた「参加」と「動員」を媒介する過程として人々が取り結ぶ社会ネットワークと、そのネットワークを通じて交わされる意味・シンボルの機能に照準することで、集合行為をめぐる動員論と行為論を架橋することが可能となる。また、社会ネットワーク研究は計量的手法を中心に発展してきたため、「つながり」の測定手法は精緻化されてきたが、一方でなぜそのような関係の構造が人や組織にある行為を促すのか、という解釈においてはアドホックなものに偏る傾向があった。そこに、社会関係を通じた運動参加という行為と動員を扱ってきた資源動員論のような社会運動論との接合の必要性がある。
具体的には、現代社会における「食」のあり方をめぐって展開されている日本のスローフード運動を事例として、標本調査によって得られるデータを対象とした計量的分析と、個別のケースにおける具体的な運動展開のプロセスに対して事例研究の手法からアプローチすることで、参加者のコミットメントのあり方と、活動を通じて形成される社会ネットワークとの相互作用を明らかにする。 -
