Overall water splitting on Cu(I)-containing ternary oxide, CuMO2 (M=Fe, Ga, Al) has been investigated. Simultaneous H-2 and O-2 evolution was accomplished by rubbing these oxide powders in distilled water, which is named as 'mechano-catalytic' overall water splitting.

Photocatalytic decomposition of water into H-2 and O-2 on Cu2O under visible light irradiation is investigated; the photocatalytic water splitting on Cu2O powder proceeds without any noticeable decrease in the activity for more than 1900 h.
