<title>Abstract</title>
Copper kesterite Cu<sub>2</sub>ZnSnS<sub>4</sub> is a promising photoabsorber material for solar cells and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this article, we will first review the crystallographic/energetic structures of Cu<sub>2</sub>ZnSnS<sub>4</sub> in view of its applications to sunlight conversion devices. Then, historical progress in photovoltaic properties of Cu<sub>2</sub>ZnSnS<sub>4</sub>-based solar cells is introduced. Finally, studies on PEC H<sub>2</sub> evolution over Cu<sub>2</sub>ZnSnS<sub>4</sub>-based photocathodes are reviewed in detail. For realizing efficient PEC H<sub>2</sub> evolution, surface modifications with an n-type buffer layer (such as CdS) and a catalytic site (such as Pt nanoparticles) were found to be indispensable. Since these surface-modified photocathodes had poor resistances under an operating bias due to the occurrence of oxidative photocorrosion of the CdS layer and elimination of the Pt catalysts, coverage with a protection layer was required to improve the long-term durability. Moreover, partial or complete substitution of the constituent cations with some cations was proved to be effective for improving PEC properties. Although recent studies showed a rapid increase in PEC properties, there is room for further development of PEC properties by using effective combinations among surface protection(s), defect engineering(s), and band engineering(s).Other Link: https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/htmp-2021-0050/html

Chalcogenide material of multinary metals are of interest in relation as optoelectronic devices such as laser and solar cell. Cu2SnSe3, ternary chalcogenide, is semiconductor with low bandgap. Beside that Cu2SnSe3 is important precursor for the growth of a promising Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin film solar cell since it contains elements that is abundance in the earth crust. The aim of this work is to synthesis Cu2SnSe3 thin film compound by using simultaneous electrodeposition. The product then was characterized using EDX, XRD, RAMAN and SEM. The result showed that Cu2SnSe3 can be prepared by electrodeposition at a potential of -0.6V vs. Ag/AgCl for 20 min. Arumealing can cause the increase of Cu2SnSe3 sample crystalinity. Annealing in argon atmosphere at 500 degrees C affected selenium evaporation in the film, therefore it improved Cu/Sn ratio. Further, annealing in selenium atmosphere at temperature of 500 degrees C can increase the intensity of Cu2SnSe3 crystal much better and also improve the Se/(Cu+Si) ratio close to ideal value. Spectra of XRD and raman also proved the presence of Cu2SnSe3 in the prepared thin film

Pure sulfide Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films were fabricated on Mo-coated glass substrate by spray pyrolysis of an aqueous precursor solution containing Cu(NO3)(2), Zn(NO3)(2), Sn(CH3SO3)(2) and thiourea followed by sulfurization at 600 degrees C for 30 min. Cu composition was controlled by varying Cu concentration in the precursor solution for optimization. It was found that Cu composition affected to not only structure but also morphology of CZTS films. At an optimal composition, we obtained a CZTS-based solar cell with maximum conversion efficiency of more than 8 %.

Polycrystalline CuInS2 chalcopyrite thin films were formed on a Mo-coated glass substrate by annealing of a spray deposited precursor film in a sulfur atmosphere at 600 °C. Partial incorporation of Ga in the CuInS2 film with a Ga/In ratio of ca. 0.2 to form a Cu(In,Ga)S2 mixed crystal was also prepared. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) analyses revealed that the Ga incorporation was effective to modulate electric and semiconductive properties of the chalcopyrite film. As a result, relatively large cathodic photocurrent responses in PEC analyses as well as high photovoltaic properties of a solar cell based on the Cu(In,Ga)S2 film were obtained. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Polycrystalline copper antimony sulfide (CuSbS2) films were fabricated by sulfurization of electrodeposited metallic stacks of Cu and Sb layers with various Cu/Sb atomic ratios at 450°C in H2S (5% in Ar). Structural analyses using X-ray diffraction revealed that CuSbS2 films obtained from Cu-poor and Cu-rich metallic stacks (Cu/Sb = 0.7 and 1.3) contained impurity phases, whereas single-phase CuSbS2 film was formed from the stoichiometric stack (Cu/Sb = 1). Morphological studies using SEM indicated that adherence of thus-formed CuSbS2 films to the Mo substrate was dependent on the precursor composition: a CuSbS2 film with poor adherence having many crevices was formed when the Cu-rich metallic stack was used, while CuSbS2 films with good adherences were obtained when Cu-poor and stoichiometric metallic stacks were used. Performance of solar cells with an Al:ZnO/CdS/CuSbS2/Mo structure also depended on structural characteristics of these CuSbS2 films, i.e., a preliminary conversion efficiency of ca. 3% was obtained for device based on the CuSbS 2 film obtained from the stoichiometric metallic stack, whereas the devices derived from Cu-poor and Cu-rich metallic stacks showed the conversion efficiency less than 1%. © 2013 IEEE.

Electrochemical Synthesis of CU2ZnSnS4 and CU2ZnSnSe4 Thin Films for Solar Cells

CU2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and CU2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) thin films were fabricated by successive electrodeposition of layers of precursor elements followed by sulfurization and selenization of an electrodeposited Cu-Zn-Sn-Se precursor. It is known that the Sn layer tends to have an island-shaped morphology, leading to formation of inhomogeneous CZTS films with rough surface. In order to improve qualities of the CZTS film, we tried to optimize the deposition condition of Sn layers. As a result, we were able to deposit Sn layers with improved morphologies. A CZTS solar cell fabricated using the Sn layer showed energy conversion efficiency of 4.4%. We also fabricated CZTSe films using Cu-Zn-Sn-Se films made by one-step electrochemical deposition as the precursor films. These films were converted into CZTS films by anneling in Ar. However, the annealing induced significant losses of Sn and Se components. These losses could be suppressed by introduction of Se vapor into the Ar atmosphere. The solar cells based on CZTSe films prepared by these methods exhibited appreciable properties.

A perspective on fabricating carbon-based nanomaterials by photocatalysis and their applications

Combining semiconductor photocatalysts with carbon nanostructures has been extensively investigated due to their enhanced photochemical conversion activity. While many nanocomposite synthesis methods have been reported, the emerging use of photocatalytic reactions in synthesizing these carbon-based semiconductor composites and even pure carbon nanomaterials is increasingly capturing the attention of the research community. Being categorized under photocatalysis, these carbon-based nanomaterials are designed by either utilizing the conduction band electron or valence band hole of a photocatalyst. This perspective surveys the literature, discusses the principle of the method and highlights the recent progress in the development of this synthetic method. Ongoing challenges and new possible solutions encountered in this research area are outlined.

On effective locations of catalytic active sites in phase boundary catalysts

Zeolite loaded with alkylsilane-covered titanium oxide was found to be more effective than its nonporous silica counterpart as phase-boundary catalyst (PBC) to promote epoxidation of alkenes with aqueous hydrogen peroxide. It was demonstrated that the phase-boundary catalyst system required neither stirring to make an emulsion, nor addition of a cosolvent to make a homogeneous solution to drive the reaction. However, some basic facts about them remain unclear, such as the question as to where an effective location of the active sites of PBC resides: is it on the external surface of the catalysts, or in their pores? In order to elucidate this problem, TS-1, HZSM-5 and zeolite loaded with alkylsilane-covered sulfonic acid in which the location of the active sites is mainly inside the pore system, were chosen as model catalysts. Catalytic activities of the catalysts TS-1 and HZSM-5 were examined after modification with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS). Their activities were compared with zeolite loaded with alkylsilane-covered titanium oxide particles, in which the active sites are on the external surface in reactions of 1-octene with aqueous H2O2 and cyclohexene with water as model reactions. The study suggests that the location of the active sites on the external surface plays an important role in the phenomenon of phase-boundary catalysis. © 2012 Published by LPPM ITB.

Photocatalytic reactions occurring at semiconductor particles/solution interfaces can be applied to organic syntheses. In this review article, examples of photocatalytic syntheses of cyclic amino acids by suspended semiconductor particles, e.g., titanium(IV) oxide or cadmium(II) sulfide are introduced and interpreted. Different from the photocatalytic decomposition of pollutants under aerobic conditions, selective conversion of organic compounds can be driven by the photocatalytic reactions under deaerated conditions.

Epoxidation of 1-octene with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature was examined using bimodal zeolite particles, in which some of the external surfaces some were covered with hydrophobic alkyl groups and the rest were left hydrophilic. When bimodal titanium-loaded NaY were added to a mixture of aqueous hydrogen peroxide and 1-octene, these particles could be assembled just at the liquid-liquid phase boundary, resulting in the formation of a particulate film, and efficiently catalyzed the epoxidation of 1-octene even without agitation. On the other hand, when TS-1 particles in which the active titanium species located mainly inside the pore system were used, there were no significant effects of partial modification on catalytic activity under the conditions of both stirring and no stirring. These results suggested that titanium species located on the external surfaces of particles were dominantly effective for the observed phase boundary catalytic system.

A novel catalytic decomposition of H2O to stoichiometric Hz and O-2 using mechanical energy was studied. The mechano-catalytic decomposition of H2O proceeded on some oxide powders when they were suspended in distilled water by magnetic stirring. Mechanical energy to decompose H2O was supplied by rubbing of oxide powders between the bottom of Pyrex glass reaction vessel and the stirring rod. H2O decomposition was revealed to take place essentially by the friction of oxide powder with the bottom surface of the reaction vessel. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Photocatalytic decomposition of water into H-2 and O-2 on Cu2O under visible light irradiation is investigated; the photocatalytic water splitting on Cu2O powder proceeds without any noticeable decrease in the activity for more than 1900 h.
