  本研究は、インド・ゴア大学社会学科で、故Alito Siqueiraが修士課程卒業生たちに推奨した自己語りを通じた教育／複数メディアによる発信に申請者が関わる人類学的実践研究を行う。この作業により、「自己語り」という営為をめぐり現われるインド社会の文化的諸問題、「自己語り」のエンパワーメントの契機としての力、複数メディアでの発信による共感の拡がり・ネットワーク形成の可能性を明らかにすることをめざす。

  本研究は、芸能に焦点を当てることで（１）インド社会の2000年以降の構造・価値観の変化を捉え、（２）西洋発の文化が世界中に拡大するという従来のグローバリゼーション・モデルとは異なる、文化の環流現象のモデル化を目指すものである。環流現象とは、国境を越える過程で変化し、様々な地域への拡大と自社会への回帰を見せる、近年のグローバルなインド文化の動態である。本研究課題では、演劇、舞踊、音楽という芸能が衛星放送、携帯電話、インターネット等からなる新しいメディア状況と結びついて世界各地に広がるとともに、インドに回帰することで生じるインド社会への影響を明らかにする。

  本研究が目指すのは、西部インド・ゴア社会の大衆演劇ティアトルの系譜を歴史的資料と現在の実践者に対する文化人類学的聞き取り調査によって明らかにし、19世紀～現在のインドにおけるナショナルな大衆文化の系譜のなかに位置づけることである。従来の研究で明らかにされてきたように、大衆文化の想像力が地方、都市を経てネーション意識を生み出す一方で、そのナショナルな大衆文化が、地域アイデンティティの再編成に環流し、独自の発展を遂げていった「地域的想像力」の編成過程に着目する。本研究でキーワードとなる「想像力」の語については、Ｃ・Ｗ・ミルズ（『社会学的想像力』）やＡ・アパデュライ（『さまよえる近代』）の用法を発展させ、自己を取り巻く世界を理解すること、その世界に関する知を生み出すために必要な力、と定義し、地域社会がグローバル化された公共圏・市民社会にアクセスする可能性についてより能動的に描き出すことを試みる。地域社会に固有の歴史・社会関係と結びついた知識・情報の伝達と共有のメカニズムに歴史的な状況が重なって、地域社会の想像力が発現してきたことに留意する。本研究が最終的に目指すのは、人々が大衆文化を単に消費するだけでなく、その中で独自の想像力を働かせてグローバル化した世界における自分のポジションを理解し、声を発していくことのできる可能性について考えていくことである。

  ゴアの大衆劇「ティアトル」に関わる人々の実践を通じ、ゴア社会におけるカトリック教徒の共同性の現れを明らかにした。ティアトルは、毎週のように劇場で上演されるミュージカル仕立てのゴアの現地語（コーンカニー語）劇で、イタリア・オペラに着想を得て19世紀末、ムンバイ(旧ボンベイ)のゴア人によって始められた。現在は、多数のプロ劇団が存在するのみならず、アマチュア劇団の活動も盛んであり、年に数回ティアトル・コンペが行われている。ティアトルの実践者、受容者のほとんどがゴア人カトリックである理由を明らかにするため、現地調査を実施した。ポルトガル植民地時代の19世紀以来、ゴア人、特にカトリックの人々は、雇用機会を求めてゴアの外部（ムンバイやデリー等のインド大都市・ヨーロッパ・アメリカ・中東湾岸諸国）へ出稼ぎ・移住を行っている。このようなディアスポラの人々も含め、ティアトルをめぐる共同性の発現を明らかにすることが、本研究の第一の目的だった。
