A surface channel formed in a coaxial germanium detector degrades the pulse-height of output signals. The pulse-height degradation gives rise to an enhancement of low pulse-height events in gamma-ray response functions at the cost of the full-energy peak. This phenomenon was closely examined for a twin coaxial-germanium detector. It was found that imperfect charge collection is primarily caused by p-type surface channels and supplemented by the n(+)-i and i-p(+) boundaries, producing low-energy events both in the valley between the full-energy peak and the Compton edge and on the hill below the Compton edge. It is shown that experimental response functions of the twin Ge can be reproduced with high precision by incorporating the imperfect charge collection in Monte Carlo simulations in a phenomenological way. Cross sections of the W-186, Re-187, Os-188(gamma,n) reactions were measured using quasimonochromatic photon beams from laser Compton scattering with average energies from 7.3 to 10.9 MeV. The results are compared with the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations using four different sets of input parameters. In addition, the inverse neutron capture cross sections were evaluated by constraining the model parameters, especially the E1 strength function, on the basis of the experimental data. The present experiment helps to further constrain the correction factor F-sigma for the neutron capture on the 9.75 keV state in Os-187. Implications of F-sigma for the Re-Os cosmochronology are discussed with a focus on the uncertainty in the estimate of the age of the galaxy.

The di-trinucleon clustering resonances of He-3+He-3 in Be-6 and t+t in He-6 were studied via the Li-6(He-3, t He-3) and Li-6(Li-7, Be-7 t) reactions at incident energies of 450 and 455 MeV, respectively. A new resonance in Be-6 was found at E-x=18.0 +/- 1.2 MeV with a width of 9.2 +/- 1.0 MeV in the binary decay channel of Be-6 -> He-3+He-3. The resonance in He-6 previously reported was also observed at E-x=18.0 +/- 1.0 MeV with a width of 9.5 +/- 1.0 MeV in the binary decay channel of He-6 -> t+t. The branching ratios of the resonances for each binary decay were both 0.7 +/- 1.0, which was larger than the branching ratio calculated in a statistical model by two orders of magnitude. The angular correlations measured for t and He-3 particles in the binary decay show a contribution dominantly from the multipolarity of L=1. We suggest that the resonances are the members of the isobaric triplet of the P-3 resonances in A=6 nuclei.

The photo-production of phi mesons from Li, C, Al, and Cu at forward angles has been measured at Egamma = 1.5-2.4 GeV. The number of events for incoherent phi photo-production is found to have a target mass number dependence of A(0.72+/-0.07) in the kinematical region of vertical bart\ less than or equal to 0.6 GeV2/c(2). The total cross section of the phi-nucleon interaction, sigmaphi(N), has been estimated as 35(-)(11)(+)(17) mb using the A-dependence of the phi photo-production yield and a Glauber-type multiple scattering theory. This value is much larger than sigmaphi(N) in free space, suggesting that the phi properties might change in the nuclear medium. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We measured de-excitation gamma-rays from N-15* s-hole state via the O-16(p, 2p)N-15 reaction. The emission probabilities for more than 6 MeV and 3-6 MeV gamma-rays axe estimated to be 3% and 5%, respectively. This result is useful for tagging nucleon decay via p --> (ν) over barK(+) in Super-Kamiokande and neutrino neutral current interaction study.
