Cross sections of the La-139(gamma,n) and Pr-141(gamma,n) reactions were measured using quasi-monochromatic gamma-ray beams from laser Compton scattering. The results are compared to the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations using different models for the gamma-ray strength function. The model parameters are constrained by the present experimental data and used to estimate the stellar photoneutron rates and their associated uncertainties and to study the implication for the production of the rare odd-odd nuclide La-138 by the p process. No evidence for a large thermonuclear p-process contribution to the solar La-138 is found. The need to further explore the photodestruction rate of La-138 is emphasized.

The strength distribution of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in Ni-58 has been obtained over the energy range 10.5-49.5 MeV via extreme forward angle scattering (including 0 degrees) of 386 MeV alpha particles. We observe a "bi-modal" El strength distribution for the first time in an A < 90 nucleus. The observed ISGDR strength distribution is in reasonable agreement with the predictions of a recent RPA calculation. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Photoneutron cross sections for Ta-181(gamma,n)Ta-180(m) were determined from simultaneous measurements of total cross sections (sigma(tot)) and ground-state cross sections (sigma(gs)) for Ta-180 in photodisintegration of Ta-181 with laser Compton-backscattered gamma rays. Techniques of direct neutron counting and photoactivation were used for the measurement of sigma(tot) and sigma(gs), respectively. The partial cross sections for the isomeric state serves as a novel probe of the nuclear level density of Ta-180. Implications for the p- and s-process nucleosynthesis of Ta-180(m) are given.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> K(+)Lambda and gamma p -> K(+)Sigma(0) reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and in the angular range from Theta(c.m.)=0(degrees) to 60(degrees) of the K+ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system at the SPring-8/LEPS facility. The photon-beam asymmetries for both the reactions have been found to be positive and to increase with the photon energy. The measured differential cross sections agree with the data measured by the CLAS Collaboration at cos Theta(c.m.)< 0.9 within the experimental uncertainties, but the discrepancy with the SAPHIR data for the K(+)Lambda reaction is large at cos Theta(c.m.)> 0.9. In the K(+)Lambda reaction, the resonance-like structure found in the CLAS and SAPHIR data at W=1.96 GeV is confirmed. The differential cross sections at forward angles suggest a strong K-exchange contribution in the t-channel for the K(+)Lambda reaction, but not for the K(+)Sigma(0) reaction.

The response function of a high-resolution high-energy photon spectrometer (HHS), consisting of a twin Ge detector and BGO (Bi3Ge4O12) anti-coincidence shields, has been measured for 10.763 MeV monochromatic gamma-rays generated in a resonant reaction Al-27(p,gamma)Si-28. The experimental response functions measured with and without the anti-coincidence were compared with results by Monte Carlo simulations, in which a pulse-height degradation effect associated with a surface channel of the twin Ge detector hits been included. Excellent agreement wits obtained between the experimental response functions and the simulations. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
