Debating can help language learners develop their persuasive and argumentative skills. For Japanese learners of English, moving from discussions to debates may be effective in a culture that emphasizes group harmony and hierarchy (Suzuki, 2008). The aim of this workshop is for participants to witness firsthand how debating can be implemented when they are introduced to students as discussions. First, students participate in active discussions where each student plays a specific role. Students choose the discussion topic, create their own discussion questions, and play the role of leader, data provider, questioner, or summarizer in addition to being an active member of the discussion. After completing several discussions, students move on to participating in critical debates where students choose topics, prompts, and stakeholders who can articulate their own arguments based on research and have anticipated counter arguments by investigating the issue from the perspective of various stakeholders.

International students are indispensable human resources who can globalize universities. However, even in education settings where international students abound, Urban and Palmer (2014) claim that despite international students’ strong desire to share their culture and background to domestic students, they are not engaged as cultural ambassadors who can contribute to the internationalization of curricula. This presentation aims to show how EFL teachers can internationalize curricula by inviting international students into their language classrooms. In this qualitative study, Japanese EFL students and international students reflected on a cross-border learning opportunity in which international students observed presentations by Japanese students and answered questions about their country of origin as cultural experts. Although both groups found this activity helpful for their understanding of other cultures and their own culture, they recommended follow-up activities that could create stronger ties between and across Japanese and international students.

Japanese university students are often asked to give presentations in English in their EFL classes. Without specific guidance on fluency that may include body language and eye contact, students are inclined to focus more on their accuracy when giving presentations. In fact, students tend to disengage from their audience by reading the texts on their slides or on their note cards. The aim of this presentation is to show how EFL students can be taught to give presentations using key presentation phrases while working on their intonation, body language, and eye contact to engage their audience, thereby enabling students to understand the importance of balancing fluency and accuracy when giving presentations.

Feedback in various forms becomes “powerful” when it is addressed within the confines of specific contexts and when distinctions are made between the types of feedback (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). Feedback is not only a mechanism to assess student progress but also a means in which students themselves can learn how best to provide constructive feedback to others as well as be more reflective of and responsible for their own learning process. The purpose of this workshop is to debate the theories and principles behind the role of feedback in foreign language classrooms; analyze examples of feedback rubrics for presentations, writing assignments, debates, and group discussions; and discuss how feedback from peers and teachers can be integrated to provide a more comprehensive process of giving feedback in EFL classrooms. Participants are encouraged to come to the workshop equipped with concrete examples of how they have tried to provide quantitative and qualitative feedback to their learners within specific language learning contexts.

In English as a Foreign Language learning contexts, debating across borders enables language learners to develop their critical thinking skills, intercultural competence (Durkin, 2008), and awareness of controversial issues (Wang & Kihara, 2016). The presenter will explain how five Japanese undergraduate students and one recent Japanese postgraduate student collaborated online with students overseas to prepare for and travel to Taiwan where they participated in two live debates (one in Japanese and one in English) with 12 Taiwanese postgraduate students majoring in Japanese. The presenter will share the students’ reflections on how to improve future cross-border debate projects, notably with the management of the debates—prior to and during the live debates. Some students also suggested that the aim of the debates be elucidated more clearly so that the debate participants could optimize their Willingness to Communicate in live debates (Wang & Kihara, 2017). Several Japanese students felt that they were able to gradually build on their intercultural competence through this debate project with Taiwanese students.

Willingness to communicate (WTC) is a concept that has been interpreted via motivational theories (Dörnyei, 2003) of how language speakers’ perception of their competence in a foreign language and anxiety associated with speaking the target language would impact their output. WTC can be consistent and/or dynamic for an individual depending on linguistic, social, cognitive, and emotional factors (Macintyre & Legatto, 2010). The presenter will explain how WTC was analyzed and interpreted in a live debate setting between 8 Japanese students and 2 non-Japanese students. A student who participated in the debate for the first time, yet was able to communicate effectively throughout the debate is the focus of this case study. The linguistic, social, cognitive, and emotional factors that contributed to students’ WTC are explored to understand how EFL teachers could facilitate students’ WTC in debate settings that require them to convey their ideas and negotiate meaning on controversial issues with other students who may or may not share their first language.

Japanese universities are at a crosswords as they are being pressured to recruit international students who can improve the global rankings of Japanese universities and contribute to Japan’s knowledge economy (Yonezawa, 2007). Ideally, Japanese university students and international students should have opportunities to interact and share their experiences with each other. However, in reality, even when universities champion internationalization principles at the structural level, on the practical level there are low levels of interaction because of language, culture, and exclusivity issues (Moon, 2016). The aim of this presentation is to explain ways in which intercultural awareness between Japanese university students and international students could be fostered by having Japanese students give presentations on the countries represented by the international students and have students compare perceptions of countries as an insider and an outsider of those countries being represented. In the end, the purpose of this activity is for the Japanese and international students to have critical discussions about their countries of origin and the realities of studying abroad in a foreign country. Findings from student reflections on this project will be discussed.

Critical discussions and debates with clear roles

Enhancing English Language Teaching and Learning (Teacher Training) (Hotel Gorkha Bisauni (Gorkha, Nepal)) JALT, THT, Nelta, Family and Friends Project

In communicative EFL classrooms, teachers often have students engage in small group discussions of four or five students. However, it appears to be challenging for students to express their opinions actively, especially when the topics are controversial and require background research. An effective management tip for EFL teachers is for students to be assigned certain roles in addition to preparing their own ideas to answer the discussion prompts. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how students can be encouraged to participate in critical discussions by organizing discussion groups where students create their own discussion questions and play the role of facilitator, debater, prover, or summarizer. The facilitator manages the time and moves the discussion forward. The debater is in charge of playing devil’s advocate. The prover is responsible for providing evidence from existing literature. Finally, the summarizer should summarize the main points discussed for each discussion prompt before the facilitator decides to move to the next discussion question. In this way, the discussion is not only organized but also requires students to think critically about how issues must be thought of from diverse perspectives and well-supported by literature.

Willingness to communicate (WTC) encompasses principles of foreign language competence from the perspective of learners and is concerned with their probability of communicating voluntarily (Macintyre, 2007). In this talk, the presenter will demonstrate how linguistic, social, cognitive, and emotional factors may influence WTC in debates where students play their roles as key stakeholders, prepare arguments and counter arguments, and negotiate meaning with fellow debaters. As WTC fluctuates depending on linguistic, social, cognitive, and emotional factors (Macintyre & Legatto, 2010), it is essential for language teachers to examine how WTC can change over time within dynamic contexts such as debating.

In the language classroom, debating gives students an opportunity to expand their critical thinking skills by investigating and exploring controversial issues from the perspective of various stakeholders. In addition to critical thinking skills, debating across borders can contribute to developing students’ linguistic and intercultural competence within a global community of English speakers. The aim of this presentation is to share how a MEXT-sponsored project in which Japanese university students participated in synchronous e-debates with university students in Poland, Taiwan, and Vietnam was implemented and modified. The e-debating project highlighted the importance of project managers to scaffold the debates so that students were equipped with clear stakeholder positions and clash and rebuttal strategies. The project also revealed how students, by participating in an online learning community before, during, and after the e-debate sessions through SNS, were able to enlarge their global communication network. In the end, this project made students realize that they needed to learn how to support opinions with concrete evidence based on well-chosen stakeholders in order to assist in their understanding of global issues from multiple viewpoints.
