Development of a CaCO3 Precipitation Method Using a Peptide and Microwaves Generated by a Magnetron 査読あり

Microwave applications, such as microwave ovens and mobile phones, are ubiquitous and indispensable in modern society. As the utilization of microwave technology is becoming more widespread, the effects of microwaves on living organisms and physiological processes have received increased attention. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microwaves on calcium carbonate biomineralization as a model biochemical process. A magnetron oscillator was used to generate 2450 MHz microwaves because magnetrons are relatively inexpensive and widespread. We conducted transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), TEM-electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measurements to analyze the calcium carbonate precipitates. Our findings showed the formation of string-like precipitates of calcium carbonate upon microwave irradiation from one direction, similar to those obtained using a semiconductor oscillator, as reported previously. This implied that the distribution of the frequency had little effect on the morphology. Furthermore, spherical precipitates were obtained upon microwave irradiation from two directions, indicating that the morphology could be controlled by varying the direction of microwave irradiation. Magnetrons are versatile and also used in large-scale production; thus, this method has potential in medical and industrial applications.

Direct Formation of ZIF-8 Crystal Thin Films on the Surface of a Zinc Ion-Doped Polymer Substrate 査読あり

Thin films of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) on polymer substrates and MOF/polymer mixed-matrix membranes play crucial roles in advancing the field of gas separation membranes. In this paper, we present a novel method for the direct formation of continuous ZIF-8 crystal films on a polymer substrate doped with Zn²+. Our approach involves ion exchange between the doped zinc ions within the substrate and sodium ions in the presence of a CH3COONa additive, as well as interfacial complexation with eluted zinc ions and 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIM). The key factors affecting the formation of ZIF-8 crystals on the substrate were the concentrations of CH3COONa and 2-MeIM. A time-course analysis revealed that the nucleation rate during the early stages of the reaction significantly affected the surface morphology of the resulting ZIF-8 crystal films. Specifically, a higher nucleation rate led to the formation of continuous small ZIF-8 crystal films. This innovative approach enables the fabrication of densely packed, uniform ZIF-8 crystal films.

SnTe is the most widely studied p-type thermoelectric (TE) alternative to PbTe. In this study, we prepared a nanostructured SnTe bulk material via spark plasma sintering from a precursor synthesized by a chemical precipitation process without using organic molecules. The sintered sample comprised tiny grains (100–300 nm) with high-density grain boundaries. Eventually, because the material would contain no impurities acting as scattering nodes of charge carriers, the material exhibited a relatively high electrical conductivity of 7.07 × 105 Sm−1 at 310 K. The material demonstrated low lattice thermal conductivity (0.87 Wm−1K−1 at 764 K), which can be owing to the increasing phonon scattering at grain boundaries. The maximum ZT was 0.31 at 764 K in the measured temperature range. This study provides a method for the design of phase-pure and surfactant-free SnTe thermoelectric materials that exhibit low lattice thermal conductivity and high carrier mobility using a chemical synthetic approach.

Polypyrrole-coated palladium nanoparticles could be directly generated inside a metal–organic frameworks. The resulting MOF composites exhibited higher semihydrogenation capability than the analog composite without polypyrrole coating.

KGaA, Weinheim To diversify metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), multi-component MOFs constructed from more than two kinds of bridging ligand have been actively investigated due to the high degree of design freedom afforded by the combination of multiple ligands. Predicting the synthesis conditions for such MOFs requires an understanding of the crystallization mechanism, which has so far remained elusive. In this context, microflow systems are efficient tools for capturing non-equilibrium states as they facilitate precise and efficient mixing with reaction times that correspond to the distance from the mixing point, thus enabling reliable control of non-equilibrium crystallization processes. Herein, we prepared coordination polymers with pillared-layer structures and observed the intermediates in the syntheses with an in-situ measurement system that combines microflow reaction with UV/Vis and X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopies, thereby enabling their rapid nucleation to be monitored. Based on the results, a three-step nonclassical nucleation mechanism involving two kinds of intermediate is proposed.
