In this article, a new approach for problem solving is proposed. The approach is named “Ka-Ki-Ku-Ke-Ko" loop. It consists of five stages that rhyme with “Ka," “Ki," “Ku," “Ke," and “Ko" in Japanese. The five stages are described separately. Some examples are shown to understand each stages and those whole process.

In this paper we discus influence of procedures for an interactive identification method on forms of identified membership functions. First, we clarify factors that influence forms of identified membership functions, taking the BASE method as an example. Secondly, we examine influence of three factors, 1) presentation order of elements, 2) number of categories for rating membership degree, 3) verbal labels of these categories, through two psychological experiments. The obtained results are as follows; 1) the presentation order affects transition area width of identified membership functions...

Subjectivity, is inherent characteristics of information processing by/in humans, but almost no researcher has tackled this issue as main theme. Thus, this paper aims to give the readers a framework of subjective information processing(SIP)at first. Moreover, treatment of subjectivity in several natural sclences and relationships of SIP with related fields of engineering are described. Another aim is to show potential of SIP through an example, a model for commumicating subjective degree with adverbs of degree.

In this paper, a systematic method to design rating scale is proposed. The rating scale used by respondents in various subjective evaluation ought to be easy to rate for them. This study aims (1) to clarify existence of individual preference towards scale design, i.e., easy / difficult to answer, and (2) to propose a system that treat differences of the preference and individual meaning of categories. To obtain fundamental findings for constructing system, two psychological experiments are executed; the experiments consist of (1) tasks of choosing and assigning rating categories, and (2) ra...

Independence of functions of verbal hedges from modificands is important issue to implement hedges to computers as fuzzy sets. In this paper, we aim to discuss he independence experimentally. First, we confirm that the differences of the modificands do not affect the functions of the hedges, based on the membership functions for the hedges obtained from 72 subjects. Then, we describe treatment of context dependability of hedges comparing the Zimmer's model and the model proposed in this paper.

In this letter, we compare the three compound methods of the Multiple-scale technique to improve the quality of the scale values estimated by the method of fuzzy categories. The results show that the maximum compound method brings higher ability to estimate the scale values than the other methods despite categories used in the scale.

Two expriments are performed to determine the optimal white background color for the positive presentation mode of a VDT screen. The first investigates white background color preference without regard to task. One-hundred twenty-four subjects rate the white back-ground colors of a VDT screen. In addition, twenty-three subjects adjust background color to their preferred color. The second experiment studies changes of preference of white back-ground color after VDT work. Four operators perform data-entry task for three hours during five days, and the results indicate that the prefered white b...
