  • Easily available tables of atmospheric refraction for high school and college students observing celestial position

    Atmospheric refraction has become less common in today's astronomy, because position astronomy is not important for many astronomers. Therefore there is hardly available tables that allows easy finding atmospheric refraction without troublesome calculations. Atmospheric refraction is, however, still essential knowledge in the astronomical observation as one of the activities of education. For high school and college students observing the position of the stars, planets, moon and sun, I created atmospheric refraction tables based on Radou's tables in the astronomical ephemeris published by Japan Coast Guard Marine Information Department in 2009. These tables and method can be viewed and downloaded at Konan University Repository.

    Since the Sasayama Group is non-marine deposits, it is difficult to determine its geologic age that is originally based on the change of marine animal fossils. Therefore biostratigraphy with non-marine fossils and measurement of radiometric age by various methods have been performed. As a result, it has been clarified that it is fluvial deposits of the Albian to Cenomanian mountain basin. However, due to the variety of methods of age determination and the difficulty, it is sometimes considered that arguments are still divided regarding the age. In this paper, based on the latest research on stratigraphy, the various chronologies presented in the previous researches are organized by clarifying the collection points and horizons of the samples for dating. Consequently it turned out that the cause of confusion in the argument is the lack of stratigraphic data or geographical information with the precision that can be compared with other age data. In addition, as geological results, it was clarified that Albian / Cenomanian, that is, the Early Cretaceous / Late Cretaceous boundary is located near the uppermost part of the Sawada Formation of the Sasayama Group.

    The longest and most destructive debris flow among many sediment disasters induced by Typhoon
    1112 ( Talas) has happened in the uppermost stream part of the Yuya River in Kii Peninsula, where is covered by the sedimentary rocks of the Muro Group of the Shimanto Supergroup. The group which consists of extraordinary thick sandstone and conglomerate beds generated by the transformation and conglutination of the unconsolidated sand and gravel layers, gave many very large boulders that made the debris flow fast and destructive heavily. The changes of grain size, sorting, thickness and other characteristic of the debris flow sediments and shape, erosion, energy and other factors of the catastrophic landslide are described in this paper. Consequently, the process and mechanism of the landslide and following debris flow are revealed, based on the field observation and analysis of satellite photo by Google Earth.
