ヴィクトリア朝時代、英海軍・陸軍によって救出され、女王（あるいは英貴族）の庇護のもと、イギリスで暮らした非白人の少年少女の分析を通して、大英帝国に強調される博愛主義を再考する。

ヴィクトリア朝（1837-1901）は「文化」に強いこだわりを見せた時代であるとともに、その思考や行動の枠組みや問題意識、価値観や世界観は、反発にせよ郷愁にせよ、その後の時代に与えた影響は深く大きい。「ヴィクトリア朝的なるもの」は、今なおイギリスや旧植民地の人びとを、さらには、明治日本をはじめ、かつてこの時代のイギリスから強い影響を受けた国家や地域の文化や価値観をも束縛しているように思われる。本研究では、21世紀初頭の今なお、「今なおわれわれとともにある」と評されるこの時代へのオブセッションを「ヴィクトリア朝幻想」と呼び、その形成過程を具体的に分析するとともに、この幻想を解体、脱構築するなかで、社会学者の協力を得ながら、われわれ自身と現代と言う時代を見直す「新たな視座」を得ることを目的としている。
