It is too complicated to teach supra-segmental phonology, namely rhythm, intonation and the stress of a foreign language analytically. One tool for learning these may be the frequent imitation of model sounds. In creating authentic software or a textbook of English pronunciation training, voices of some native speakers of the language are usually recorded as models. In cooperation with staff members at Konan University, I am developing computer-based listening and pronunciation software which is designed to improve learners' ability to sense and monitor some prosodic features of English. Be...

The Real Trouble Spots in the Perception of English

Second or foreign language (L2) auditory perception tends to be problematic because first language (L1) transfer leads to numerous auditory mistakes. These mistakes have complicated origins but learners seem to ascribe them above all to speech rate. On the other hand, in the field of second language pedagogy, the trend since the 1990s has been to think of listening in terms of something that occurs in combination with reading, writing and speaking. Yet, the exercises of many listening materials are still essentially traditional in design. Task-based activities seem to be appropriate to incr...

Studies on the sound system currently emphasize the importance of suprasegmental features such as rhythm, intonation and stress. Many researchers argue that because of their major role in communication, these features merit greater priority than attention to individual sounds in the curriculum. This doesn't mean, of course, that work on individual vowels and consonants is irrelevant, but these features should not be the starting point or the pedagogical focus when learning another language. Yet, the traditional approach to teaching English pronunciation gives priority to individuals sounds,...

Perceptual Training and the Production of English Consonants by Japanese Learners

This study investigates the impact of intensive perceptual training on the pronunciation of English cosonant by Japanese students. I have already examined the effectiveness of using visual cues in the perception of labial/labiodental cotrast in a previous study (Iba 2004). According to that study, audiovisual training seemed to be more effective in improving the perception of the labial/labiodental contral contrast than anditory training. In the study, Japanese learners of English were tested on their perception of the /l/-/r/ contrast in audio, visual and audiovisual modalities, and then u...

The Effectiveness of Visual Cues in L2 Perception

The difficulty that L2 learners encounter in perceiving sound contrasts that do not occur or that have different phonemic status in their native language is well attested. Many studies have now shown that certain training techniques can lead to significant improvements in the perception of these new sound contrasts. However, this training is typically long and effortful and does not exploit a source of information that has typically been of great benefit to native speaking listeners in poor listening conditions: visual information. Two studies carried out at University College London sugges...

This article examines a new pronunciation syllabus, the Lingua Franca Core (LFC), which is advocated by Jennifer Jenkins. The LFC is a collection of phonetic features necessary for mutual intelligibility among non-native speakers of English. Jenkins has selected the LFC based on findings from her empirical research in which English pronunciation is examined in its sociolinguistic context. Firstly, the main features of the LFC are stated, followed by a discussion of some of the innovative points of the LFC and problems inherent in it. Lastly, the author of the article proposes her ideas rega...
