The development of high-performance, environmentally friendly electrodeposition processes is critical for emerging coating technologies because current technologies use highly complex baths containing metal salts, supporting electrolytes, and various kinds of organic additives, which are problematic from both environmental and cost perspectives. Here, we show that a 200 μm-thin polyelectrolyte membrane sandwiched between electrodes effectively concentrates metal ions through interfacial penetration, which increases the conductance between the electrodes to 0.30 S and realizes solid-state electrodeposition that produces no mist, sludge, or even waste effluent. Both, experimental results and theoretical calculations, reveal that electrodeposition is controlled by ion penetration at the solution/polyelectrolyte interface, providing an intrinsically different ion-transport mechanism to that of conventional diffusion-controlled electrodeposition. The setup, which includes 0.50 mol L-1 copper sulfate and no additives, delivers a maximum current density of 300 mA cm-2, which is nearly fivefold higher than that of a current commercial plating bath containing organic additives.

We describe a simple bottom-up strategy to generate [Au(SPh)] (SPh: thiophenolate) coordination polymer (CP) based thin films by employing an interfacial self-assembly on a nylon substrate. This method utilizes Au ion-doped nylon film as a precursor of [Au(SPh)] CP and a support substrate to control the kinetics of the reduction of the Au ion from Au(III) to Au(I) and the complexation of Au(I) ions as well as SPh on the surface of the nylon film. The obtained CPs exhibit a fibril morphology with high crystallinity, which leads to a luminescent property. Further, we systematically study the formation mechanism of [Au(SPh)] CPs on the substrates. Amorphous CPs formed at an early stage of reaction are transformed to crystalline CPs based on the rearrangement of components during the reaction. The findings described herein offer novel and interesting openings for the synthesis of Au ion-based CPs that demonstrate desired functions for a wide range of applications. n n n

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd In this study, we succeeded in the crystal surface modification of metal–organic framework (MOF) with an organic polymer by site-specific radical polymerization. A MOF was selected with interpenetrated structure containing a naphthalenediimide moiety with electron accepting capability. N, N-dimethylaniline, as an electron donating guest, induced electron transfer to the napthalenediimide moiety, generating radical anions on the pore and crystal surfaces, initiating radical polymerization. The resulting composite was examined in detail with XRD, TG, TEM, ICP, IR, gas adsorption, and fluorescent measurements, demonstrating that an organic polymer was generated only on the crystal surface, preserving the original porous property. In addition, higher structural stability in response to H2O was observed after polymer wrapping.
