ヴェルボトナル法（Verbo-Tonal Method: VT法）は言語の聞き取りや再生に重要な働きを果たすリズム・イントネーションなどプロソディーを重視した言語理論およびその指導法を指す。聴覚障害者の発音指導や外国語教育の分野で広く応用されているが、その具体的な指導法の一つに各言語特有のプロソディーを象徴するわらべ歌（nursery rhymes）の導入がある。本稿では、まずVT法の概要を述べ、次に2020年前期、コロナ禍でオンライン授業に切り替わった英語発音のウェブ授業2クラスにおいて、VT法に基づく英語のnursery rhymesをなぜ、どのように導入したか、またその結果はどうであったかを、受講生の反応が反映される大学の行った授業評価アンケートを基に記述し、オンライン授業の効用、限界点も交えて考察する。研究室で行う実験と違い、実際の授業への導入においての考察なので、はっきりと結論づけることはできないがVT法に基づくnursery rhymesの授業への導入は想定外の高い評価を得たので、受講生には良い効果があったのではと考えられる。今後、学生の声がどのように変化したか音声分析によって効果測定を行う予定である。

This book consists in the main of a doctoral dissertation, completed in March 2010. Prosody, the rhythmic and intonational aspects of language, is sometimes deemed unteachable. In order to challenge this belief, I have performed three experiments concerning the teaching of prosodic features of English to Japanese learners. My findings indicate the importance of the sequence of training; namely, the efficacy of teaching prosodic features over individual sounds. I also suggest the possibility of applying low-pass filters to pronunciation training.2010年3月に完成した博士論文を編集し、出版したもの。プロソディは教えられないという論があるが、プロソディに関する3つの学習実験の結果、特に訓練でプロソディを先行させると効果があることが判明した。その他の実験で得られた知見を英語教育に応用する方法を述べた。

This study investigates the extent to which L2 learners with different L1 backgrounds are sensitive to phonetic information contained in the visual cues to a novel phonetic contrast (labial/labiodental contrast), and the degree to which this sensitivity can be increased via intensive training.

多様な第二言語学習過程を最適化する学習モデルと支援システムの研究

音韻、語彙、構文といった様々な要素に分けて外国語の学習実験を行う環境を構築し、要素間の相互関係、特に学習の順序効果を調査した。その結果、同一処理レベル内では順序効果はなかったが、処理レベルが異なる音韻学習と語彙学習の間で有意な順序効果があり、学習初期段階に低次処理を習得することの重要性が示された。この結果に基づき、低次から高次へと習得していく「ボトムアップメソッド」を学習モデルとして提案する。また、その学習モデルの効果を最適化するためのカリキュラムモデルとして「反転学習の概念モデル」を作成し、効果があることを確認した。さらに、学習解析の手法で個別に最適化する方略について整理、考察を行った。 -
インターフェースの観点からの英語音調の研究

今年度は、本研究的初年度であり、L2語者により英語イントネーションの学習可能性を探るため、学習ソフト制作にむけそのデザインをするという計画を立てた。成果としては、学習ソフトの開発が順調に進み、予定より早く実際の製作にまでこぎつけた。このソフトは英語母語話題のモデル音声とそのF0曲線が表示され、学習者はモデル音声を聞いて自分の音声を産出、録音し、自分の音声のF0曲線を目で確認して、モデル音声との違いを耳だけではなく目でも確認できるというものである。作成のデザイン、理論的背景、意義については、日本英語学会第26回大会シンポジウムで、共同研究者3名が発表する機会を得、成果を世に問うことができた。予定より早く学習ソフトが作成できたので、学習実験も計画を繰り上げ、10月から1月にかけ4ヶ月間にわたり実施することができた。英語学習者15名の規模で学習実験を行い、現在その結果を解析中であるが、日本語を母語とする英語学習者は、1)音声の持続時間が母語話者の半分から3分の2程度くらいしかなく、2)ピッチの幅も概して狭いか、広すぎるかのどちらかで、母語話者のような「適切」なピッチを作ることができないことが分かってきた。また3)文法上の知識があってもそれを音声に反映することが苦手である、という暫定的な分析結果を得ている。
